MOR Design presents DOME

'A sculptural light shaped by stone and perception'

MOR Design presents DOME, a sculptural light carved from solid natural stone that exists at the intersection of object, material, and atmosphere. More than a luminaire, DOME is defined by perception, by what is revealed gradually through light, surface, and presence. Each DOME is carved from a single block of Estremoz marble, one of the highest-quality marbles in Europe, refined to a delicate thickness of just 8 mm. The material's natural veining, density, and tonal variation guide the final form, ensuring that no two pieces are ever alike. DOME is available in two sizes (Ø 60 cm and Ø 100 cm), allowing it to adapt to different spatial scales while maintaining the same material intensity.

When illuminated, light moves across and through the stone's thin surface, revealing depth, texture, and nuanced shifts in shadow. A bespoke LED illumination system, specially developed for DOME, ensures a warm and even diffusion of light that enhances the stone's natural qualities. The resulting atmosphere evolves with time, space, and viewpoint, shaping the surrounding environment through subtle material presence.

Neither purely functional nor overtly decorative, DOME resists immediate definition. It is an object that asks to be observed rather than explained, experienced before it is understood. Its restrained glow privileges material expression over intensity, fostering a contemplative relationship between light, stone, and architecture.

Designed by Pedro Sottomayor, DOME reflects an approach grounded in beauty, functionality, and sustainability. Produced in Portugal and finished entirely by hand, the piece stands as a testament to local sourcing and enduring craftsmanship.

"I was interested in creating an object that doesn't immediately explain itself," says Sottomayor. "With DOME, light becomes a way of revealing the stone rather than overpowering it. The piece is meant to be discovered slowly, through presence, material, and perception."

With DOME, MOR Design reinforces its commitment to architectural clarity and timeless objects designed to endure beyond trends.
