Danish timber giant receives seven injunctions for workplace injuries

A Danish timber giant has received seven injunctions from the Danish Working Environment Authority following a work accident in September at its Ullerslev facility on Funen. Four of these orders are immediate injunctions, meaning operations cannot resume until the issues have been corrected.

The violations of Dansk Træemballage identified include a lack of proper machine usage instructions, which can compromise worker safety, as well as insufficient protective measures when handling chemicals and inadequate safeguards around moving machinery parts. Two machines in particular, the "small wraparounds" and "large wraparounds," were cited for not automatically stopping when access fences or gates were removed, posing a serious risk to employees.

The use of odorless petroleum without proper protective equipment drew particular criticism, as staff were reportedly only wearing goggles, leaving them exposed to potentially fatal inhalation risks. Dansk Træemballage's director, Christian Bisgaard Jensen, stated that the company takes such orders seriously and typically begins reviewing and adjusting procedures immediately after an accident, even before regulatory orders are issued. Despite this, the repeated safety issues have led to renewed scrutiny from the authorities, highlighting ongoing concerns about compliance and worker protection at the facility.

This situation underscores the critical importance of rigorous safety protocols in timber and woodworking operations, particularly when hazardous chemicals and machinery are involved. The immediate injunctions require prompt action to ensure that employees are adequately protected and that operations can resume safely.
