Furniture importers to the United States are being urged to prepare for a significant regulatory change, as the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) introduces mandatory electronic filing for certificates of compliance. The new requirement will take effect in July 2026 and apply to most consumer products, including home furnishings.

According to the Home Furnishings Association, importers will be required to submit compliance certificates through the CPSC's new e-filing portal. While the information mirrors documents companies already maintain, the move to mandatory digital submission increases the risk of penalties for errors or delays. Non-compliance could result in shipment holds, denied entry at ports, or financial fines.
The CPSC says the system aims to streamline compliance, reduce paperwork, and improve product traceability to enhance consumer safety. However, the association has warned that the transition represents a major operational shift and requires early preparation.
Importers are encouraged to register for the system in advance, review existing compliance documentation, and ensure data accuracy. Additional guidance and an informational webinar are expected in early January.
