Family-owned mattress chain ends 26-year run amid market pressures

A family-owned mattress retailer, is closing all remaining stores after 26 years of operation. The company attributed the closure to retirement and rising competition from online and national brands. At its peak, the chain operated 15 locations across the Philadelphia and South Jersey region, with four remaining.

The retailer, Mattress Factory, launched a going-out-of-business sale in early January 2026, stating on its website: "All stores are closing sale. Thank you for 26 years!" Although no exact closing date has been set, the stores are expected to remain open into February to sell remaining inventory.

Industry trends have made it difficult for regional chains to compete. Despite the U.S. mattress market being projected to grow from $18.11 billion in 2025 to $21.88 billion by 2030, national brands and online sellers dominate, putting smaller chains under pressure. Sales increasingly depend on replacement cycles, housing growth, and technology-driven sleep products rather than first-time purchases.

Mattress Factory's closure marks the end of a long-standing regional presence, reflecting broader challenges facing traditional mattress retailers in a changing market.
