Calia Italia weaves memory and modernity in Giuggiola armchair

Calia Italia continues to celebrate its 60-year legacy with the second chapter of its editorial series, Interviste d'Autore, spotlighting the brand's most iconic creations. This latest episode focuses on Giuggiola, an armchair born from a childhood memory and reimagined as a symbol of contemporary design, where tradition and innovation intertwine.

"Its silhouette is inspired by the ancient 'crocchie', the braided updos traditionally worn by the women of Matera, rediscovered through a collaboration with students from the Industrial Design program at Sapienza University of Rome," the company notes.

Giuggiola is crafted from 12 hand-woven strands, showcasing Calia Italia's renowned artisanal expertise. Each piece is unique, as "no two armchairs are ever alike, as the weave changes continuously, giving life to truly unique pieces." The armchair features a seat structure of solid wood and multilayer panels padded with polyurethane foam, complemented by a metal backrest available in white or graubraun finishes, and an elegant tail-shaped base. The collection includes fixed, swivel, and storage-seat versions, with eco-polyurethane and 100% polyester wadding cushions for enhanced comfort and support.

From this Italian design heritage, a series of international counterparts has emerged, including Madame G, Lady G, Doña G, and Vivì, the latter distinguished by a high backrest designed to "give one's soul a place to retreat." "One family, many cultural identities," the release states, emphasising Giuggiola's role as more than an armchair — "it is an object that preserves stories."

The Interviste d'Autore project continues Calia Italia's journey through six decades of design, paying tribute to both human and creative heritage, "a legacy that keeps evolving while looking to the future."
