The research shows that 42% of respondents plan to host Christmas dinner, while 24% are organising Christmas drinks or parties, and 22% are preparing for New Year's Eve celebrations. Younger generations, particularly adults aged 25 to 34, are driving festive hosting trends. This age group is the most active in planning Christmas and New Year celebrations and the most style-conscious, with 81% stating it is important to make gatherings feel special through stylish tableware, décor, and thoughtful finishing touches. Social media plays a significant role in shaping their choices, influencing 80% of young hosts' home styling decisions. Popular purchases include candles and lighting, seasonal decorations such as wreaths and garlands, as well as tableware, glassware, and soft furnishings. In contrast, 51% of Baby Boomers reported buying "nothing in particular," highlighting generational differences in festive spending habits.
Cosiness and a personal atmosphere remain central to hosting at home. Survey respondents cited the relaxed, intimate ambiance of a home gathering as their top motivation, with 44% choosing this option for its cosy feel and 40% valuing the personal and meaningful experience it provides. The aspects people enjoy most about hosting include spending quality time with loved ones, seeing guests enjoy themselves, and making everyone feel welcome. Women are slightly more likely than men to prioritise quality time, with 48% versus 41%.
Cost considerations also play a role, as hosting at home is generally perceived as more economical than dining out. Nearly half of respondents (45%) believe that hosting costs less than going out for a festive meal or a night on the town. Despite budget concerns, Brits continue to invest in making their gatherings special, with average spending during the festive season reaching £130. Regional differences are evident, with the North East spending the most at £147, followed by the North West (£139) and Greater London (£138).
To help hosts create a welcoming atmosphere, TK Maxx suggests mixing candles and lighting to transform a space, investing in versatile pieces such as neutral table linens, quality glassware, and classic servingware, and layering in small seasonal decorations for maximum impact.
