Sarah Oakley on Sofa Connections’ new chapter at the January Furniture Show

'After 30 years, we decided to go directly to retailers and build real connections'

For over 30 years, Sofa Connections has built a reputation as a family-driven furniture manufacturer, known for its commitment to quality and craftsmanship. In 2024, the company began a new chapter under the leadership of Managing Director Sarah Oakley and her husband Matt, shifting away from a longstanding third-party supply model to engage directly with retailers and interior designers. This strategic move reflects their dedication to delivering 'great quality, beautiful British made' furniture with a more personal touch.

'We've predominantly sold to just one customer for over 30 years,' Sarah reflects, 'but now we're going direct to retailers. We've got lots of retailers and interior designers on board, and that's the big change.' Despite the volatility of the UK market, especially amidst economic uncertainty and industry challenges, Sarah remains optimistic. 'It's been a tough year, slower growth than we'd like, but we've continued to grow with new customers and opportunities.'

A significant milestone for Sofa Connections in 2025 was the relocation to a larger factory with improved facilities, including a mezzanine floor and a showroom for clients to experience their furniture first-hand. 'It was a big move, but it works better for us. I handled the liaison, and Matt did the heavy lifting,' Sarah smiles. This move signals a fresh start as the company prepares for one of the most important events on the calendar: the January Furniture Show.

Colourful new innovations
'The January Furniture Show is the biggest in the UK, and as a British manufacturer, it's our place to be,' Sarah states. After debuting at the show last year with an invite to the prestigious Hall One, the Sofa Connections team returns with renewed enthusiasm. 'We felt almost like we shouldn't be there among these big furniture brands! But it was brilliant exposure and we're really grateful.'

Visitors are naturally drawn to their stand, not only because of its prime location at the bottom of the stairs in Hall One, but also due to the quality and vibrant colours on display. 'The trend is very neutral right now, but I'm not a fan of beige everywhere. We've gone for greens and autumnal shades, deep oranges and browns, so hopefully it stands out.' Though the stand may not be the flashiest, Sarah is confident the craftsmanship and design will speak for themselves.

On product innovation, Sofa Connections is introducing three new modules named after UK golf courses; Gaudet, Highgate and Ilkley, each representing a different style and offering a fresh take on traditional designs. 'The Ilkley is my favourite, it's really comfortable with a beautiful scroll arm that fits the arm perfectly,' Sarah reveals. This collection marks a deliberate move away from the 'safe' designs the company has been known for, inspired in part by direct feedback from customers. 'No idea is a stupid idea,' she says. 'We work closely with our clients and often develop bespoke pieces to meet their needs.'

Quality, connection and a local touch
The company's commitment to quality extends beyond design into local manufacturing and materials. 'Our frame makers are literally five minutes away, and most of our fillings and foams come from a local factory. We use British leather when requested, but fabric usually comes from Europe or further afield.' This local sourcing, combined with flexible bespoke options and personalised service, sets Sofa Connections apart. 'We can offer any fabric on any model, and bespoke sizing, things bigger manufacturers can't easily do.'

When asked about the lasting impression she hopes visitors take away from their stand, she states: 'Great quality, beautiful British made furniture, from a family-run business.' In an industry where style can sometimes overshadow substance, Sarah emphasises the importance of understanding what lies beneath the surface. 'Buyers need to know what our wood frames are made of, what springs are used and what guarantees are offered. That's what separates us from the rest.'

Looking ahead, Sofa Connections is focused on building relationships and growing trust in a competitive marketplace. 'People often need to see us three times before they invest,' Sarah explains. 'So keeping up appearances is really important. We're here to stay, with quality and care at the heart of everything we do.'

In a market full of fleeting trends and uncertainty, Sofa Connections' story is a timely reminder that quality and connection endure. As Sarah says, 'It's not just about making furniture, it's about building trust, one sofa at a time.'
