Richard Goode on G Plan's participation at the January Furniture Show

'You don’t stay relevant for 70 years by standing still'

The January Furniture Show remains a cornerstone of the British furniture calendar, and this year, G Plan is back with fresh momentum. Known for blending mid-century heritage with modern comfort, the brand holds a unique position in the market. As G Plan prepares to showcase new developments at the NEC, it focuses clearly on what matters most to retailers and customers alike.

Roots and renewal
Richard Goode, Head of Sales at G Plan, helps to guide the brand's renewed energy. G Plan's roots date to the 1950s, when its clean, British-crafted designs defined mid-century living. Richard notes, 'As customers moved through different life stages, their needs changed, but their trust in G Plan didn't. They stayed loyal because we remained comfortable, dependable, and grounded in craftsmanship.'

This understanding inspired the launch of the G Plan Vintage collection over a decade ago, designed to reconnect with younger consumers by celebrating the brand's original design language. The collection has performed especially well through key retail partners like John Lewis.

Why January matters
G Plan returned to the Furniture Show last year after a five-year break and it underlined the event's unmatched importance in the UK interiors scene. 'There's no other show with this kind of footfall,' Richard explains. 'It's where our key customers gather, making it the perfect stage for new product launches and large-scale retailer engagement.'

Earlier in the year, G Plan also took part in Long Point, which plays a complementary role. 'Long Point lets us engage directly with independents and gather detailed feedback,' Richard says. 'It's where conversations start; January is where we make our biggest statement.' This two-step approach helps G Plan remain responsive to retailer needs while maximizing impact.

Redefining relaxation
One standout launch is the expanded Solna range, first introduced as a rocker recliner with heated seats, powered headrest, and lumbar support. Retailers have responded enthusiastically. Richard describes the heating system as 'a gentle, enveloping warmth that adds real comfort without waste,' operating at just around two pence per hour, luxurious yet practical.

This January, Solna grows with a modular sofa range that complements the chair. Featuring corner configurations, flexible layouts, and removable backs, the range reflects retailer insights and market trends. Additionally, G Plan will unveil sofa beds for the first time, developed with notable partners, a meaningful expansion of the brand's offering.

Determination for innovation
A refreshed visual identity will accompany G Plan's return, featuring the brand's traditional red for the first time in years. 'Customers will recognise it immediately,' Richard says, underscoring the move as a return to a trusted look. The stand will also showcase a wide range of upcoming collections and complementary tertiary colours.

Manufacturing in the UK remains central to G Plan's identity, but Richard acknowledges changing market realities. 'While British craftsmanship is our foundation, the influence of competitively priced imports can't be ignored. That's why we're launching the 'G Plan Style' brand; more contemporary sofa and chair ranges sourced from Malaysia through a partnership with a global manufacturer.' This initiative offers fresh styles and affordable price points, complementing the UK-made collections.

Richard stresses the balance the brand aims to strike: 'Supporting independents is core to our business, but we're also focused on innovation; whether through comfort, logistics, or retailer feedback. This blend of tradition and evolution keeps us strong and relevant in a competitive market.'

This January, G Plan will prove that staying true to your roots is the foundation for innovation and growth.
