Missed Netflix villa deal costs buyer €23 million

Joop Drechsel, owner of the striking villa on the Nieuw-Loosdrechtsedijk in Loosdrecht, has filed a €14 million claim against the buyers of his property at the court in Lelystad. He has also claimed €8 million for the villa's inventory, including boats and cars.

The villa gained wider recognition through the Netflix series Amsterdam Empire, in which it was featured as the home of a coffee shop owner and his girlfriend. The property had been on the market for €13.75 million for some time. According to Drechsel, the villa was sold to a British company, but the agreed payment, which was due in August, was never made. In addition to the claims for the property and its inventory, Drechsel is also seeking €1.7 million in forfeited fines.

Drechsel, a former top executive at travel organization BCD and former director at KPN, told the court that he still hopes the buyer will complete the purchase. By initiating summary proceedings, he aims to put extra pressure on the British party. The buyer, however, was not present at the hearing.

The villa features several driveways, three bathrooms, and a pond, and is considered one of the most luxurious homes in the region. The case is being closely watched, as its outcome could set a precedent for future transactions of high-end properties where buyers fail to meet their payment obligations.

Drechsel's claim seeks full compensation for both the property and its inventory, bringing the total to €23 million, excluding the forfeited fines.
