270 jobs at risk

Historic timber firm collapses as construction slowdown deepens

A 160-year-old German timber manufacturer has filed for insolvency, placing 270 jobs at risk. Despite wood remaining a popular and climate-friendly building material, the Ulm-based company has entered self-administered restructuring after the local district court opened proceedings and appointed Georg Jakob Stemshorn as insolvency administrator.

Mocopinus GmbH & Co. KG, known for high-quality wooden façades, terrace construction and interior fittings, operates sites in Ulm, Ammelshain near Leipzig and Karlsruhe. The firm has contributed to major projects, including the wooden exterior of the Hotel Bretterbude in Heiligenhafen.

According to the company, a "changed market environment" and a sharp decline in construction activity and residential permits weakened demand. The loss of Siberian larch supplies due to the war in Ukraine, rising costs and higher refinancing pressure further strained operations.

Chief executive Ulrich Braig stated that the goal is to stabilise the business and secure its future under court supervision, adding that self-administration allows the firm to 'actively shape the path forward'. Talks with potential investors have already begun.

Operations will continue at all sites, and employee wages are secured for three months through insolvency pre-financing. No layoffs have yet been announced.
