IKEA opens first store in New Zealand

IKEA has officially opened its first store in New Zealand, located at Sylvia Park in Auckland, marking the Swedish retailer's latest global expansion. Alongside the physical store, IKEA products are now available nationwide via IKEA.com and the IKEA app, offering home delivery, planning services, and 29 pick-up points across the country.

The long-awaited store, employing 500 co-workers, showcases over 7,500 products across styled room-sets, providing inspiration and convenient services for Kiwi homes. IKEA has tailored its offering to local lifestyles, drawing insights from visits to more than 500 New Zealand homes, and its first Life at Home Report for New Zealand reflects these learnings.

Tolga Öncü, Ingka Retail Manager (COO), said: "We're thrilled to bring IKEA all the way to New Zealand, the country that's geographically the furthest from our Swedish beginnings. That distance makes this opening special. Coming to New Zealand is a real leap of faith, investment and friendship, showing we're not just exporting a store, we're planting roots for the long term, creating jobs, learning from local communities and tailoring our offer for Kiwi homes."

For the first time in a new market, IKEA has introduced a Buy Back service from day one, available even for non-IKEA products, supporting circular living and waste reduction. The Sylvia Park store features a Swedish Restaurant and Bistro serving iconic dishes, including plant-based options, and offers renewable energy operations, with a rooftop solar PV system providing approximately 50% of the store's electricity. The remaining energy comes from New Zealand's renewable sources, while 100% LED lighting with programmable timers reduces consumption. Customers also have access to 25 electric vehicle charging stations on-site.

Mirja Viinanen, CEO and Chief Sustainability Officer, IKEA Australia and New Zealand, stated: "I'm proud we are now open both in-store and online. We appreciate the excitement shown by the people who showed up and queued to visit our store for the first time. Right from the start, we wanted to enter in the best way possible and be a good neighbour."

The New Zealand store is the largest IKEA location since 2021, when a store opened in Ljubljana, Slovenia, and is part of Ingka Group's broader investment plan, which includes over EUR 5 billion in new locations and optimising existing stores by FY27.
