Vitra gives furniture a second life through circular model

Vitra is expanding its sustainability efforts through the 'Vitra Circle' programme, refurbishing and reselling used furniture for private and contract clients. Launched in 2018, the initiative now covers the contract market under the Circle for Contract model, which includes refurbished products, refurbishment services, and a take-back programme.

Rolf Keller, Vitra Head of Circularity, explained that each item is restored using original spare parts and undergoes two quality checks, ensuring customers receive authentic, near-new furniture with a warranty equivalent to new products. Customisation is possible, including upholstery colour changes and maintaining or polishing the patina.

Refurbished items are typically 15–25 percent cheaper than new equivalents, with CO₂ savings of up to 90 percent due to the avoidance of new material production. Vitra primarily focuses on seating furniture, conference tables, and Alcove Sofas, catering to small offices, large workplaces, universities, and restaurants.

The programme not only reduces environmental impact but also mitigates storage costs for customers, giving high-quality furniture a new lease of life while promoting sustainable consumption in the workplace.
