Finn Juhl’s iconic “Høvdingestol” achieves €87,120 at auction

A rare edition of Finn Juhl's "Høvdingestol" was sold at Bruun Rasmussen auction house on 24 November 2025 for 650,000 DKK (approximately €87,120.50). Crafted in teak with patinated natural leather in the 1950s, the chair is highly sought after due to its provenance and its creation by master cabinetmaker Niels Vodder, a close collaborator of Juhl.

The chair carries significant family history, originally gifted by Finn Juhl and his wife Inge-Marie Skaarup to her father for a jubilee, and remained in the family for generations. Andreas Krabbe, modern design specialist at Bruun Rasmussen, notes that both the chair's artistic merit and its documented personal history enhance its appeal to collectors.

Designed for the 1949 Carpenters' Guild Exhibition, the chair earned its name when Juhl suggested it be called a "chief chair" after King Frederik IX tried it. Today, it is regarded as a masterpiece of Danish modernism and a symbol of Juhl's enduring design legacy, commanding attention from both national and international collectors.

The auction underlines the continued strong global demand for original Danish design classics, where historical provenance can significantly influence market value.
