Danish furniture manufacturer sets new course after heavy losses

Mutebox, the Danish manufacturer of soundproof booths and meeting pods, is undergoing a major strategic shift under new CEO Thomas Stephansen, who took over in January 2025. Since 2022, the Vejle-based company has lost around DKK 17 million but benefits from a capital-strong owner, John Bjerrum Nielsen A/S.

Stephansen is steering the company away from selling individual booths directly to customers, instead focusing on contract and project sales through major furniture industry partners. The product range has also expanded to include desks, wall-mounted acoustic panels, and a new eight-person Mutebox, emphasising both design and workplace acoustics.

The rebranding involves replacing the original wooden slats with modern textiles and contemporary finishes, aligning with current office interior trends. Mutebox has also achieved an international ISO certification, enhancing its credibility for architects and large projects.

Despite investments in product development, fixed costs have been cut by nearly 50 percent. Sustainability remains central, with production following a zero-waste principle, recycling surplus materials through the owner's CNC processing facilities.

Stephansen remains optimistic: the strategy is delivering early results, and the company expects to meet its budget in the first six months of the new fiscal year, reinforcing confidence among partners and stakeholders.
