Designer transforms recycled tennis balls into iconic seat for art project

Marie's Corner has unveiled its latest "Art Seat" project, a collaboration between the brand and Belgian designer Mathilde Wittock. The annual initiative pairs an iconic Marie's Corner model with a contemporary artist to create a one-of-a-kind work of functional art, blending design, craftsmanship, and creativity.

For this edition, Wittock reimagined the brand's Perry model using Soundbounce, a material made from recycled tennis balls collected in Belgian clubs. Seventy-seven balls were repurposed to form a comfortable, tactile seat, reflecting Wittock's ethos of sustainability, circular design, and sensory experience.

The creation debuted at the Brussels Expertise Labels Prizes 2025, where Wittock was nominated for the BEL Transmission prize alongside other notable designers, including Julie Heymans, Thibault Fournal SWET, and winner Marie Adam-Leenaerdt. The project highlights the potential of circular materials in high-end design while emphasising the intersection of art, functionality, and environmental consciousness.

Marie's Corner praised the designers and supporting teams, including Pierre Marcolini, president of BEL, Tessa de Caters, and Agence Curryketchup, for their contributions to the initiative. The collaboration underscores the growing trend of sustainability-led innovation in contemporary furniture design, turning everyday objects into visually striking and environmentally conscious pieces.
