Germany’s October inflation softens to 2.3%

Germany's inflation rate eased slightly to 2.3% in October 2025, according to final figures released by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). The rate compares with 2.4% in September and 2.2% in August, marking a modest decline after two consecutive monthly increases. As Destatis President Ruth Brand noted: "Following two consecutive increases, the inflation rate fell slightly again in October. The prices of services continued to increase at an above-average rate and drove up inflation."

Month on month, consumer prices rose by 0.3%, confirming provisional results. The harmonised index of consumer prices (HICP) showed identical movements, increasing 2.3% year-on-year and 0.3% compared with September.

A key contributor to easing headline inflation was the continued decline in energy prices, which fell 0.9% compared with October 2024. Household energy costs dropped 1.7%, with significant reductions in heating oil (-6.0%) and modest declines in electricity (-1.4%) and district heating (-1.0%). However, natural gas prices rose 0.9%, and solid fuels increased 2.5%. Motor fuels edged up 0.4% year-on-year.

Core inflation, excluding food and energy, remained steady at 2.8%, underlining persistent underlying price pressures. Net rents excluding heating rose 2.0%.

Goods prices increased 1.2%, driven in particular by non-alcoholic beverages (+7.2%, with coffee-related products +21.3%) and second-hand cars (+5.5%). Price falls were recorded for mobile phones (-4.0%) and consumer electronics (-3.2%).

On a monthly basis, overall prices rose 0.3%, with strong increases in air travel (+19.4%). Food prices remained stable, with notable declines in butter (-10.0%) and apples (-6.5%).

Destatis confirmed that all provisional results for October 2025 have been upheld.
