The international jury honoured Opalia with the 2025 Sustainability Award, a distinction recognising brands that excel in sustainable design and the circular economy, with particular attention to recyclable materials and product life cycle optimisation.
With Opalia, Glas Italia and Patricia Urquiola continue to explore the expressive and sustainable potential of recycled glass. The project embodies a commitment to environmental responsibility and craftsmanship, transforming what was once considered waste into poetic, enduring objects.
The Opalia collection includes tables, coffee tables, consoles and vases, all crafted from regenerated glass. Through a meticulous heat treatment process, the glass develops a soft, irregular surface enriched with delicate bubbles, a tactile reminder of the material's rebirth. Each piece is inherently unique, celebrating imperfection as a form of authenticity and beauty.
As Patricia Urquiola explains, "Opalia is a collection where the flaw in the glass becomes beauty."
The result is a striking reinterpretation of glass, not as a static or purely decorative medium, but as a living material, capable of transformation and surprise. By reusing discarded glass, the collection bridges technological innovation with artistic sensitivity, redefining what sustainable design can look like in contemporary interiors.
