Antiques industry in turmoil as Trump tariffs spark international shock

New import tariffs introduced by President Donald Trump have sent shockwaves through the global antiques and decorative arts trade, with industry figures warning of severe disruptions to cross-border business.

According to The Art Newspaper, Trump's executive order places sweeping tariffs on a range of imported goods, including wood, upholstered furniture, and other decorative items — sparking panic among dealers and collectors.

Millicent Ford Creech, an antiques dealer based in Memphis, Tennessee, described her reaction as one of "complete shock." She noted that while the policy aims to support domestic manufacturers, such as those in North Carolina, it unfairly penalises the high-end antiques market. "Most of my clients want furniture prior to 1800," she said, adding that her clientele prefers original craftsmanship rather than modern reproductions.

The move, enacted under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (1977), exempts "informational materials" such as paintings and sculptures. However, furniture, watches, wine, and classic cars do not qualify, leaving many sectors facing unexpected tariff burdens.

Industry experts warn that the decision could stifle the U.S. antiques trade and disrupt the broader international market for historic and decorative goods.
