Overall, total like-for-like (LFL) sales across all categories declined by 1.96%, but homewares stood out with a strong +10.5% increase, compared to a -2.79% decline in the same week last year. Store-based homeware sales jumped +11.4%, while online sales rebounded by +12.4% after four weeks of decline.
Despite this growth, overall retail performance was dampened by reduced footfall, which fell -4.7% year-on-year. High streets saw the sharpest decline at -8.1%, while shopping centres and retail parks were down -1.9% and -0.6% respectively.
BDO attributed the dip in total sales to falling shopper numbers, despite improved performance in homewares and steady online fashion sales. The week's weather, starting mild and turning cooler, contrasted with the previous year's unsettled, stormy conditions.
The results suggest homewares remain a bright spot for UK retailers amid wider challenges in consumer footfall and spending.
