Servomuto illuminates Milan Design Week with Palazzi and Palazzi metal lamps

Italian design studio Servomuto has unveiled its latest lighting creations, the Palazzi and Palazzi Metal lamps, taking inspiration from the visionary architecture of Aldo Rossi. Originally presented during Milan Design Week 2025 at Nilufar Gallery, these designs reinterpret Rossi's iconic Teatro del Mondo, an ephemeral floating theatre created for the 1980 Venice Biennale, through the medium of light.

The Palazzi lamp is an evolution of Servomuto earlier light installations, blending playful architectural references with technical precision. Its pleated Kvadrat fabric envelops a polished brass structure housing three LED tubes, producing an ethereal glow that highlights both texture and form. The design emphasises a duality: lightweight yet substantial, theatrical yet methodically engineered, creating a subtle dialogue between architecture and illumination.

Building on this concept, the Palazzi Metal lamp transforms the familiar form into a more industrial, tactile expression. Maintaining the original dual-volume structure, the fabric is replaced with metal mesh, allowing LED light to filter through a shifting pattern of shadows. Two versions are offered: a lighter variant with horizontal wires available in steel, brass, and copper, and a denser version with vertical weave in steel only. Both celebrate imperfection and material elasticity, reinforcing Servomuto's ethos that expressive design thrives in the nuances and character of the material itself rather than in flawless industrial uniformity.

Each lamp is intentionally unique; curves and meshes subtly differ from piece to piece, embodying the human touch and creative spontaneity behind Servomuto's approach. This emphasis on individuality ensures that the lamps are not just functional objects, but sculptural statements that animate a space with personality and presence.

From concept to execution, Servomuto's lighting designs challenge the traditional boundaries of the lampshade, transforming a classic form into an inventive exploration of light, shadow, and materiality. With the Palazzi series, the studio bridges the gap between historical architectural inspiration and contemporary design innovation, offering collectors and enthusiasts a piece of Milan Design Week magic.

The Palazzi and Palazzi Metal lamps are available exclusively through Nilufar Gallery.
