Kolmö Lighting explores the intersection of stone, light and craft at Feria Hábitat Valencia 2025

'We wanted each person who discovered our work to own a truly unique piece'

At Feria Hábitat Valencia 2025, Burgos-based studio Kolmö Lighting presented a collection that continues its exploration of natural materials and handcrafted production. Founded by Sheila Escudero and Alfredo Benito, the atelier positions itself at the intersection of lighting design, sculpture, and material research, developing pieces in stone, wood, and corten steel.

Sheila described Kolmö's origins as a response to a search for authenticity in lighting. 'Kolmö was born from the desire to bring emotion back to light,' she said. 'We wanted each person who discovered our work to own a truly unique piece. Natural stone made that possible, no two are ever the same.'

Material-led design
Kolmö's process begins with material experimentation rather than form. 'We work through touch and observation, letting stone, wood, or corten steel guide us,' Sheila explained. 'Every line and form has a purpose, to accompany the light.'

The studio's work is defined by a dialogue between light and matter. 'Stone doesn't simply reflect light; it conducts, filters, and transforms it,' she said. 'Each vein and fracture creates a different atmosphere. That silent dialogue between matter and light is the heart of Kolmö.'

Local production and sustainability
Kolmö operates as a small-scale workshop with a focus on local sourcing and short supply chains. 'Each piece is handcrafted in our own workshop, using local materials and nearby suppliers,' Sheila said. 'We produce little, but with intention. Sustainability for us also means creating pieces that last, objects that age with grace.'

The studio works closely with regional craftspeople and quarries in northern Spain. 'In our region, between Burgos, Segovia, and Soria, we are surrounded by extraordinary materials: the limestone of Campaspero, the phyllite of Segovia, and the sandstones that change colour with the light,' she said.

Feria Hábitat Valencia as meeting point
Kolmö presented its latest pieces at Feria Hábitat Valencia, positioning the collection within a European network of architects, interior designers, and lighting professionals. 'Feria Hábitat allows us to show who we are in the only way Kolmö can truly be understood, in person, through light, touch, and material,' Sheila said.

The studio views trade fairs as a way to connect with professionals who value process and craftsmanship. 'It's an opportunity to build relationships and share a slower, more emotional way of understanding light,' she added.

Collaborations with architects and designers
Kolmö's business model is based on project collaborations rather than large-scale production. 'We work hand in hand with architects and interior designers, adapting dimensions, finishes, and materials,' Sheila said. 'Each piece is created for a specific place and story.'

This collaborative approach, she explained, defines the studio's identity. 'Working with architects and interior designers allows us to bring our pieces into very different contexts and to understand how light can transform a space,' she said.

European positioning and future direction
Kolmö's market presence is anchored in Europe, particularly in northern regions. 'Europe is an essential market for us,' Sheila said. 'In countries like the Netherlands, Denmark, and others in the north, there is a deep appreciation for design that integrates seamlessly into architecture and lighting. We don't compete in volume but in authenticity.'

Looking ahead, the studio intends to maintain its artisanal scale while expanding its presence at design fairs. 'We plan to continue participating in fairs such as Feria Hábitat Valencia and aim to be present at Interihotel Barcelona,' she said. 'Our goal is not to grow in quantity, but in depth, refining details, caring for light, and keeping the artisanal essence of the studio alive.'

Sheila concluded that Kolmö's ambition remains rooted in continuity rather than expansion. 'Kolmö will continue to be a small space where matter, light, and hands speak the same language,' she said.
