80 Years after its breakthrough Finn Juhl's 45 sofa is reborn

To mark the 80th anniversary of its original design, the iconic 45 Sofa by Finn Juhl is being reintroduced by House of Finn Juhl. The sofa, originally created in 1945 alongside the groundbreaking 45 Chair, embodies Juhl's signature sculptural lightness and organic sensibility, now available as a limited First Edition of 80 numbered pieces.

Like the 45 Chair, the sofa represents "uncompromising design, where Finn Juhl pushed the boundaries of what was physically possible with wood." By separating the carrying and carried elements, Juhl introduced a new approach to furniture construction, creating the illusion of the seat and backrest floating freely.

Juhl, who was "neither a trained cabinetmaker nor a traditional furniture designer," relied on master cabinetmaker Niels Vodder to translate his drawings into finely crafted furniture. The combination of precise joints, refined curves, and the natural qualities of wood ensures the sofa remains exceptional and timeless.

The design features two soft curves subtly dividing the seating area, generating rhythmic visual tension and highlighting Juhl's artistic sensibility. Both the 45 Chair and 45 Sofa have become international collector's items and enduring symbols of the golden age of Danish Modern.

The First Edition is crafted in oiled walnut and upholstered in Watercolour textile available in 32 colours, or in Elegance leather in walnut, black, or natural vegetable-tanned leather. Each piece carries a discreet sterling silver emblem beneath the frame and comes with a unique certificate, available through selected official Finn Juhl retailers worldwide.

The sofa will later join the permanent collection with extended material options, including oak and a broader range of fabrics and leathers. Its dimensions are H 85 × L 116 × D 73 cm × SH 44 cm.

House of Finn Juhl, holding exclusive rights to revive the designer's furniture, emphasises heritage, craftsmanship, and durability, producing over 50 classic masterpieces. Finn Juhl's work remains celebrated globally, from Denmark to the USA, with highlights including the Trusteeship Council Chamber at the UN Headquarters in New York.
