The German lighting and lamp market recorded a 6.1% decline in sales in 2024, falling to just under €4.8 billion, according to the "Lighting and Lamp Industry Report" by IFH Cologne and BBE Handelsberatung. A further decrease of 4.4% is forecast for 2025.

The shift to LED technology continues to disrupt the sector, with lamps, including incandescent, discharge, and LED, experiencing substantial losses. Between 2017 and 2024, sales volumes for lighting products nearly halved, while residential, technical, and other lighting categories saw relatively stable but modest declines.
Distribution channels remain under pressure. Brick-and-mortar retailers, including hypermarkets and food retailers, lost market share gained during the pandemic, while online specialists such as Amazon and Temu achieved a slight 1.6% growth in 2024.
Christoph Lamsfuß, Senior Consultant at IFH Cologne, stated that online retail 'is set to grow again in 2024,' noting that price-conscious consumers increasingly compare products online, benefiting platforms offering competitive prices and extensive ranges.
Industry forecasts suggest that the downward trend will persist until 2029, with expected average annual sales losses ranging between 1.2% and 2.4%. Analysts highlight that the market's structural transformation, driven by technological shifts and changing consumer behaviour, will continue to reshape the competitive landscape.
