New U.S. tariffs on imported furniture, lumber, and cabinets are now in effect

The United States has implemented new tariffs on imported furniture, timber, and kitchen cabinetry, escalating trade tensions with China and other suppliers. The levies, ranging from 10% on lumber to 25% on upholstered furniture and cabinets (rising to 30–50% in January 2026), took effect on 14 October 2025 under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act.

The Biden administration's predecessor, Donald Trump, argues the measures protect domestic industries and national security interests by encouraging local manufacturing. However, industry experts and economists warn of higher costs for consumers and potential slowdowns in home building and retail furniture sales.

Companies such as Ethan Allen say they are less affected due to existing U.S. and nearshore production, while others like Naturepedic report plans to raise prices or shift suppliers. Analysts expect the tariffs to reshape sourcing strategies across the U.S. furniture supply chain and global trade routes.
