Operating company Matratzen Direct AG said it had held talks with more than 40 potential investors, but the final interested party withdrew. Locations in cities such as Dortmund, Cologne, Bonn, Siegburg, Langenfeld and Bergisch Gladbach will all be affected. Cologne alone will lose three outlets in Ehrenfeld, Godorf and Urbach.
MFO has faced financial problems for years, with consumer restraint, inflation and falling sales undermining recovery attempts. In 2023 the company recorded losses of €1.2 million. Earlier this year, a restructuring plan reduced its store network from 124 to 97, but the turnaround failed.
A nationwide clearance sale has now begun. MFO stated that online orders will be fulfilled while stock lasts, with customer service available for returns and complaints, though delays may occur. Warranty deadlines will also be extended as a goodwill gesture. Business operations will cease no later than 31 December 2025.
