A new study from Nationwide reveals that while younger generations may lack traditional DIY skills, they are more likely than older generations to complete the jobs they start. Based on a poll of over 2,000 UK adults, just 9% of Gen Z have ever bled a radiator, compared to 53% of Baby Boomers, yet Gen Z typically finish DIY tasks within three to four months, versus 11 months for Boomers.

Despite a third of Brits believing DIY knowhow is being lost, Gen Z and Millennials are showing a strong commitment to getting jobs done. However, they're spending more in the process: Millennials spend an average of £1,123 annually on DIY, while Gen Z spend £1,014, significantly higher than Boomers at £444.
The most common tasks across all generations include hanging pictures, painting walls, and assembling flatpack furniture. YouTube remains the most used source for guidance, though Gen Z heavily relies on TikTok, and Millennials also turn to Facebook and Instagram.
Nationwide's Head of Mortgage Products, Carlo Pileggi, noted: 'Forget dusty manuals... today's how-to comes from TikTok hacks and YouTube tutorials.' While skills may be evolving, the drive to create a home clearly endures.
