German furniture store closes its doors after more than 150 years of operation

A longstanding furniture store in Solingen, Germany, will close at the end of 2025, ending a legacy spanning over 150 years. The store, located on Kamper Straße, is currently operated by the fifth generation of the family. Regular customers have been notified of the closure.

Managing director of Möbel Hahn, Thomas Schalwich, cited declining sales as the primary reason for the decision, although current orders will continue to be processed as usual. The company, originally founded as a cabinetmaker's workshop in 1869, began trading in furniture in 1885, building a longstanding reputation for craftsmanship and customer service.

The store has already begun selling its exhibition pieces in preparation for the closure. Möbel Hahn's departure marks the end of a historic chapter in Solingen's furniture retail sector, reflecting broader challenges faced by traditional brick-and-mortar furniture businesses in adapting to changing consumer habits and market conditions.
