Calls for market-friendly simplifications

GD Holz welcomes EU delay on deforestation regulation

The Gesamtverband Deutscher Holzhandel (GD Holz) has welcomed the European Commission's proposal to delay the introduction of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) by another year. The association sees the postponement as an opportunity to implement practical improvements in documentation requirements and simplify procedures within the internal market.

Maximilian Habisreutinger, Chairman of GD Holz, said:
"This provisional introduction stop provides the opportunity to implement practical improvements in documentation requirements and simplifications within the internal market." He added: "In our discussions with the German Federal Government, we agree on a clear deregulation for the internal market. Thanks must be expressed to the Members of the European Parliament at both EU and federal level, who have been open to reducing bureaucracy in business, which was different under the previous government."

A key demand of GD Holz, that proof of deforestation-free status should rest solely with the first market entrant within the EU, has found broad support in Brussels.

GD Holz Managing Director Thomas Goebel highlighted:
"For timber imports, we also need further meaningful simplifications, especially regarding the localisation of geodata and documentation requirements, to remain globally competitive."

The proposed postponement, subject to the upcoming trilogue procedure, reflects both the complexity of implementing the EUDR and the need for a coordinated approach to maintain European competitiveness in the global timber market.
