Shaping the future of interior sun protection:

ViS Annual Meeting highlights innovation amid market challenges

The Verband innenliegender Sicht- und Sonnenschutz (ViS) held its annual meeting in Münster this September, drawing on the city's reputation for sustainability, mobility, and quality of life as inspiration for industry innovation. The event gathered board members, industry representatives, and media to exchange insights and define strategic priorities for interior sun protection.

The meeting opened with internal board sessions, followed by an evening of networking and tours of Münster's historic and modern landmarks. The public portion featured presentations on industry developments and research.

A key highlight was the modernisation of the seminal industry reference book Interior Sun Protection: Combining Design and Function, overseen by Gerhard Sperling. The updated edition aligns with current standards and technology, serving as a central resource for professionals involved in the design, manufacture, installation, sales, and maintenance of interior sun protection systems.

Wilhelm Hachtel, former CEO of MHZ Hachtel and long-serving ViS board member, was elected honorary board member for his contributions to European initiatives including the European Solar Shading Organisation (ES-SO) and the Transparente Gebäudehülle (RTG) network.

Research insights were shared by Dr Jacqueline Lemm (TFI Aachen) on the IGF-funded Acoustic Yarns project, which explored how textiles like curtains, wall coverings, and flooring can enhance room acoustics through innovative yarn structures.

The keynote, delivered by Prof. Dr Philipp Büchler (FH Dortmund), focused on resilience and innovation in medium-sized enterprises, under the motto: "Those who do not deviate from the path will fall behind!" He highlighted technology transfer and strategies to ensure sustainable growth in a challenging market.

Economic conditions remain a concern. ViS's mid-2025 survey of 37 member companies reported slight revenue growth (+0.4%) but declining sales (-2.1%), with double roller blinds seeing the largest drops (-11.5%). Investment plans were cautious, and companies highlighted bureaucracy reduction and boosting consumer purchasing power as urgent priorities. Export prospects and employment expectations, however, remain positive.

ViS's next annual meeting is scheduled for 24–25 September 2026. The association represents approximately 70% of the German interior sun protection market and continues to drive innovation, sustainability, and industry standards.
