Carl Hansen & Søn extends Vilhelm Lauritzen’s foyer series with new compact bench

Carl Hansen & Søn has introduced a new addition to the celebrated Foyer Series by Vilhelm Lauritzen: a shorter version of the Foyer Bench. Originally designed in 1945 for Copenhagen's Radio House, the bench exemplifies Danish functionalism, combining timeless design with exceptional craftsmanship.

Vilhelm Lauritzen, one of Denmark's most influential modernist architects, designed the Radio House in Copenhagen as a holistic "Gesamtkunstwerk", creating every interior detail, from chandeliers to door handles. His Foyer Series, comprising a bench, sofa and armchair – was designed for the building's vestibule. Carl Hansen & Søn relaunched the series in 2022 in collaboration with Vilhelm Lauritzen Architects, and the new compact bench now extends its appeal to private homes, restaurants and hotels.

The VLA75S Foyer Bench features a slender, FSC®-certified oak frame, meticulously crafted using classic tenon joints and polished to achieve a seamless surface. Its hand-upholstered seat, available in fabric or leather, is double-stitched with handmade piping cord and buttons, reflecting an "exclusive simplicity" that characterises Lauritzen's work.

Commenting on the launch, Knud Erik Hansen, CEO and third-generation owner-manager of Carl Hansen & Søn, said:
"We're thrilled to enhance our Vilhelm Lauritzen collection with this new bench, whose more modest dimensions will make it easier to find its way into private homes, restaurants and hotels. The simple, subdued aesthetic of Lauritzen's Foyer Bench merges with Carl Hansen & Søn's masterful craftsmanship and exquisite materials."

The Radio House, completed in 1945 after nearly a decade of construction, is now home to the Royal Danish Academy of Music. The building remains an internationally recognised masterpiece of Danish functionalism. Lauritzen's enduring attention to organic forms and exclusive materials, from brass and teak to Greenland marble and cowhide leather – is embodied in the curved elegance of the Foyer Series, which continues to furnish the Radio House lobby today.

The VLA75S Foyer Bench will be available in stores from August 2025, with a recommended retail price starting at €1,933 (ex. VAT). Measuring 131 cm in width, 48 cm in depth and with a seat height of 45.5 cm, it provides a versatile seating solution for contemporary interiors while maintaining Lauritzen's original design integrity.
