Poundland to cut 100 head office jobs amid restructuring

Discount retailer Poundland is set to cut over 100 head office roles as part of a major company restructure. The decision follows the retailer's withdrawal from online sales and the removal of its frozen and chilled food ranges in stores. Additional redundancies are linked to recent store closures.

The restructuring plan received High Court approval on 26 August, and a two-month consultation with affected staff is now concluding. A Poundland spokesperson explained:

"We need to create a simpler and more focused business to get us back on track after a significant period of underperformance. This has involved withdrawing certain product categories, retiring our transactional website and rewards app, and reducing central roles at our Walsall Customer Service Centre, as well as closing Darton and Springvale distribution centres."

The spokesperson emphasised that these changes are intended to create a sustainable platform for the future, safeguarding thousands of jobs and hundreds of stores over the long term. While the company expressed regret over the impact on staff, it framed the move as a necessary step to restore financial health.

Poundland halted its store closure program earlier this month following the execution of its recovery plan. The discount giant was saved from administration in August, just days before it was projected to run out of funds.

The restructuring reflects broader challenges in the UK discount retail sector, including changing consumer habits, rising costs, and the need for streamlined operations.
