One in five renovators (21%) expanded their bathroom by taking space from an adjacent room, most commonly a bedroom. Some homeowners increased their bathroom size by up to 50% (13%) or even more than 50% (8%). Marine Sargsyan, Houzz staff economist, notes, "We're seeing a notable shift toward larger bathroom footprints, suggesting that homeowners may be rethinking the role of this room in the home. Many are now creating spaces that support relaxation and daily comfort."
Motivations for renovations remain largely practical: 51% cited bathroom deterioration as their primary reason, followed by 35% wanting to update outdated styles, 28% personalizing newly purchased homes, and 24% renovating due to financial readiness. In terms of size, 40% of new bathrooms measure between 5 and 9.99 square metres, while 14% are 12 square metres or more.
Design trends are evolving as well. Contemporary, modern, and traditional bathrooms remain most popular at 38%, 26%, and 8% respectively. However, Japandi and Scandinavian styles, though still niche at 4% each, rose by 3% over the last year. Neutral colours dominate, with white (26%), off-white (16%), grey (14%), and beige (10%) the most commonly chosen wall colours. Green and blue are also emerging for more colourful interiors.
Product choices show notable trends too. Floating vanities are selected by roughly half of renovators, while built-in and freestanding vanities follow at 30% and 19%, respectively. Integrated basins remain most popular (28%), with wall-mounted (24%) and drop-in (22%) styles close behind. Showers with doors are used by 70%, with frameless hinged models most common.
A standout trend is the rise of freestanding baths, now chosen by 34% of renovators, up 4% from last year. In contrast, traditional alcove baths fell by 9% to 31%. Sustainability is also a priority, with 87% of homeowners incorporating eco-friendly features, including LED lighting (72%) and water-efficient fittings (42%).
Houzz's findings are based on responses from 330 UK homeowners who renovated their bathrooms between 2024 and 2025, highlighting evolving preferences towards larger, more stylish, and environmentally conscious bathroom spaces.
