Norwich-based department store Jarrolds has announced plans to close its Granary furniture shop on Bedford Street next month. The closure will be accompanied by the retailer's 'biggest sale ever,' offering discounts of up to 50% on furniture products.

Jarrolds confirmed that an independent operator will take over the furniture department within its flagship store, ensuring that some services continue despite the external store closure. The company also stated that "a number" of jobs will be affected by the shutdown.
The decision reflects a wider trend in the UK retail sector, where department stores are increasingly consolidating operations and outsourcing certain departments to reduce costs and adapt to changing consumer habits.
While Jarrolds will maintain furniture offerings within its main store, the closure of the standalone Granary shop marks a significant shift in its local presence and signals the challenges faced by traditional department stores in sustaining multiple physical locations.
The sale and transition aim to balance operational efficiency with continued customer service, though the impact on staff and the local retail landscape will be closely watched in the coming months.
