JYSK announces Austrian growth push with 15-store rollout

Furniture retailer Jysk, formerly Dänisches Bettenlager, plans to open 15 new stores in Austria over the next two years, expanding its network to 108 locations. The announcement comes amid "negative industry trends," yet follows strong sales growth and opportunities created by the Kika/Leiner insolvency, which allowed Jysk to gain market share.

Jysk Austria CEO Sandor Szimeiszter highlighted potential for growth in Vienna, Graz, Linz, and Innsbruck, noting, "In Budapest, we have 15 shops, in Vienna only five, and there could certainly be more."

Internationally, Jysk opened 148 new stores in the 2024/25 financial year, achieving an 11.8% sales increase to €6.2 billion. In Austria, the company derives most of its revenue from furniture (20.2%), mattresses (18.9%), and garden items (16.1%).

The Austrian furniture market is dominated by XXXLutz, which includes Möbelix, Mömax, Butlers, and Home24, followed by Ikea. At the end of 2024, XXXLutz held a 36% market share in Germany, Ikea nearly 20%, Kika/Leiner 7%, and Jysk 3%. The bankruptcy of Kika/Leiner at the start of 2025 removed the third-largest player from the market, opening opportunities for competitors like Jysk to expand their footprint.

Jysk's planned expansion signals confidence in Austria's market despite broader sector pressures.
