Reimagining celebration:

IKEA and Gustaf Westman unveil playful winter collection

IKEA has announced a new 12-piece collection of tableware and home objects in collaboration with Swedish designer Gustaf Westman. From porcelain plates and cups to candleholders and lighting, the collection offers "a fresh, playful perspective on festive tradition," encouraging people to celebrate on their own terms, without waiting for a special occasion.

The collaboration marks Gustaf Westman's first product design partnership with another company and forms a distinctive part of IKEA's annual winter range, VINTERFINT. The partnership grew from a shared aim "to explore a more modern and inclusive approach to seasonal celebrations, creating a design that is informal and joyful, yet never forgets the spirit of tradition," according to IKEA.

Maria O'Brian, IKEA Range Identity Leader, said: "Celebration often comes with established traditions, and we were curious to explore a more fun and inclusive take. Teaming up with Gustaf Westman felt like a natural match to help us reimagine the holidays with a twist. His approach to colour and form feels very true to IKEA, but he challenges conventions in a bold, expressive way. We are thrilled to make the work of such an exciting designer accessible to a wider audience."

Westman's design signature is evident in the collection's curvy, sculptural shapes and confident colour palette, which combines traditional reds and greens with bubble gum pink and baby blue. He reflected: "For me, this was an opportunity to take traditional holiday decor aesthetics and turn it on its head, instead, introducing a sense of playfulness and boldness. This is my interpretation of the holidays; it's a new design for a new generation."

Highlights include porcelain dining plates in dark green and pink, featuring a square form with a soft, round well at the centre, and a dedicated meatball plate celebrating IKEA's iconic dish as it turns 40. "For so many in Sweden, there's no Christmas without meatballs," Westman said. "This plate is my interpretation of that tradition. It's a simple, fun idea designed to honour the meatball, but it works perfectly for so many other things, too."

The collection also incorporates lighting and decorative objects, such as candlesticks, a modern candelabra-inspired lamp, a rechargeable lantern, and a spiral vase. Westman explained: "A rounded form has no clear ending, which I think gives an object more life. This vase is a good example — it has a continuous shape, and it also brings an element of humour with its bounciness. The two parts don't really look like they need each other, but they do, like two pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. It's that feeling of being a bit unnecessary, but in a fun way."

The limited-edition collection will be available from September 2025, with availability varying by market.
