Norwegian mattress maker switches to paper-based packaging for sustainability

Mondi has supplied a Norwegian furniture company with its re/cycle CompressWrap, a paper-based packaging solution designed to protect high-end mattresses during transport. The system features a dual-layer design: the inner layer uses Mondi's FunctionalBarrier Paper 95/5 for durability and vacuum sealing, while the outer layer employs FunctionalBarrier Paper Reduce for secure wrapping.

Ola Forsberg, Mondi's industry group manager, said the collaboration between them and Ekornes demonstrates the company's commitment to meeting industry-specific challenges while promoting a circular economy. The solution replaces Ekornes' previous plastic packaging and is compatible with the company's existing machinery, making the transition cost-efficient.

Pål Aage Nordahl, managing director at Ekornes Beds, stated that the new packaging aligns with the company's sustainability goals and provides a "safe unwrapping experience" for customers without the need for scissors or knives.

Mondi will present the solution at FachPack in Nuremberg, Germany, from 23–25 September 2025. The development follows Mondi's recent launch of kraft paper suitable for form-fill-and-seal packaging for heavy or sharp-edged items, highlighting the growing industry shift toward recyclable and paper-based packaging.
