Raw material shortage raises concern for German mattress makers

A fire at a Chempark Dormagen substation in July 2025 has triggered a force majeure declaration from chemical producer Covestro, cutting supplies of TDI (toluene diisocyanate), a key ingredient in PU foams used in mattresses, upholstered furniture, and car seats. The disruption is expected to impact roughly 10% of Germany's annual TDI demand.

Mattress manufacturers face increasing pressure as higher raw material costs can only partially be passed on to customers. While the industry isn't responsible for the supply gap, the shortage threatens delivery capacities and may cause bottlenecks in the fall. The Mattress Industry Association warns of ongoing strain amid already tight sales conditions.
