When upholstery fabric samples are sent by luxury furniture manufacturers, they become the basis for Intiaro's photorealistic 3D product visualisations. After digitisation, however, the physical textiles often remain unused, destined for storage or disposal.
For data analyst Marta Maska, those fabrics carried more potential. "I started noticing the shelves filling with gorgeous fabric samples that were no longer needed after digitalisation," Maska explains. "It felt like such a waste to let them gather dust and eventually be disposed of, so I decided to make something with them, even though I had never sewn anything before."
Maska, who holds a doctorate in literature with a concentration in Japanese art and culture, began transforming the samples into pillows, tote bags, zippered pouches and even dog beds. Using a 40-year-old sewing machine purchased by her mother during communist-era Poland, she has created more than 100 handcrafted items over the past year. Each has been donated to community centres or gifted to individuals in need of cheer.
"If you understand about Polish culture, you know it is not so easy to make people smile. The pillows and nice fabrics can bring a smile," she said.
Intiaro's co-founder and Chief Commercial Officer, Michal Stachowski, praised Maska's initiative: "Marta embodies the kind of innovation we pursue with passion at Intiaro. Her creativity and initiative fit well with the broader industry priorities around sustainability and community impact—and it's deeply personal. That's the kind of passion that resonates, both internally and with our partners."
Maska's project reflects a growing movement within the design and interiors sector towards sustainability and circular practices, where materials once considered redundant are reimagined into purposeful creations. In her case, the transformation is not just ecological, but social, turning leftover fabrics into everyday items that inspire comfort, beauty and, above all, smiles.
