Heimtextil Trends 26/27: where AI meets the human hand

The Heimtextil Trends 26/27 unveil a future where artificial intelligence and traditional craftsmanship converge. Under the theme 'Craft is a verb', the showcase explores how high-tech processes and manual techniques can coexist to open new creative horizons.

Together with trend curators Alcova, Heimtextil presents a landscape in which generative design methods and artisanal practices blend seamlessly. Tangible textures meet algorithmic precision, creating a new figure in the creative industries: the techno-craftsman. This approach positions AI not as competition, but as an extension of traditional skills.

"The Heimtextil Trends 26/27 illustrate how artificial intelligence will change the textile industry and, in combination with craftsmanship, opens up new perspectives. They provide the industry with impulses for sustainable production methods, innovative cooperation models and the development of future-proof business strategies," said Olaf Schmidt, Vice President Textiles & Textile Technologies at Messe Frankfurt.

Alcova's curators emphasise the mindful use of AI as a tool for inspiration rather than replacement. "At Alcova, we are drawn to objects and processes that are unexpected, experimental, even a little unruly – yet somehow find their way into our homes," said Valentina Ciuffi. "What surrounds us each day should provoke, raise questions, and invite conversation. That's why our focus is on projects that anticipate trends rather than chase them," added Joseph Grima.

  • Six key trends define the vision:
Re: media – digital renderings transformed back into hand-embroidered or woven textiles.
  • Visible co-work – designs where AI and human craft visibly complement each other.
  • Sensing nature – algorithmic translations of natural forms into textiles.
  • A playful touch – joyful decorative details breaking minimalist conventions.
  • Crafted irregularity – fabrics that showcase knots, seams and asymmetries.
  • The uncanny valley – designs highlighting machine elements as visible features.

The colour palette reflects this duality: grounding tones such as sand, clay and olive are disrupted by vibrant digital accents including acidic green, lilac and bright blue, creating visual tension akin to a digital glitch.

The Heimtextil Trends 26/27 will be staged in an interactive format at the Trend Arena in Hall 6.1, from 13–16 January 2026 in Frankfurt.
