New research from Houzz reveals that nearly one-in-five UK homeowners have considered separating due to the stress of completing a renovation as a couple. The 2025 UK Houzz Renovations and Relationships Report found that 16% of recent renovators admitted contemplating separation, rising to 20% among couples together for less than five years and falling to 7% for those together over 30 years.

Budget issues were cited as the leading cause of tension by 37% of respondents, while 31% struggled to agree on materials or finishes, and a similar number disagreed on overall design. Paint colours were the most common design dispute, affecting 51% of couples, followed by flooring at 47% and furniture at 38%.
Despite these challenges, 89% of couples agreed the outcome justified the stress. Many reported feeling more comfortable (59%), happier in their home (53%), and calmer (39%) after completing their renovations.
Marine Sargsyan, Houzz staff economist, said a home renovation is "one of the most demanding journeys a couple embarks on together, with numerous decisions, budget considerations and trade-offs along the way." Comparatively, UK couples are more likely to experience relationship stress from renovations than US couples, where only 4% reported similar pressures.
