On the night of 28 August 2025, an "exceptional weather event" delivered 42mm of rain in one hour and 56mm over three hours, overwhelming the store's storm drain system. Around 190,000 litres of water flooded the 30,000sqft site, causing significant damage to the building, shop fittings and product displays.
Managing director of Fairway Furniture, Peter Harding, said it was 'devastating to see so much damage' following such a major investment but praised the efforts of staff and local specialists Richfords, who worked through the night to remove water and begin drying the premises. The store reopened to customers on 30 August, though Harding admitted it looked 'less pristine than it should'.
The company is working with its insurers, Aviva, to complete restoration works and return the store to its 'clean, modern and high-quality style'. Despite the damage, the majority of product ranges remain available, and the retailer assured customers it will continue to serve the South West 'come rain or shine'.
