Dated bathroom fixtures can hold back your renovation

Many bathrooms remain outdated due to fixtures, with polished brass hardware from the 1980s and 1990s being a chief culprit, according to designers. Experts advise that replacing or updating these fixtures can instantly modernise a space.

Georgia-based designer Micaela Quinton notes that polished brass has been "undesirable" for decades, particularly on plumbing and doorknobs. Designers suggest several strategies to bring a bathroom into the 21st century. Incorporating rustic materials, such as warm wood elements or antique furniture, can balance shiny brass finishes. Alternatively, bold colours like forest green, peacock blue, or chocolate brown can distract from dated hardware, making it feel intentional.

For those who prefer to retain the brass look, switching to timeless finishes such as unlacquered, antiqued, or brushed brass can provide a rich, enduring aesthetic. Designers also recommend nickel for a full overhaul, offering a sophisticated, durable alternative that will remain stylish over decades.

These updates, whether through subtle swaps or full renovations, allow homeowners to modernise their bathrooms without a complete redesign, combining functionality with contemporary design trends.
