Minotti explores modularity and materiality through designer collaborations

'Patient and articulate craftsmanship exercise combined with sophisticated industrial processes'

Founded in 1948 by Alberto Minotti in Meda, Italy, Minotti has evolved into a reference point in contemporary design furniture, blending craftsmanship, industrial processes, and a coherent aesthetic vision. 'The harmonious dialogue between volumes and materials, the continuous exploration of compositional possibilities, and the careful selection of construction elements reveal the traits of a patient and articulate craftsmanship exercise combined with sophisticated industrial processes,' the company states. Today, Renato and Roberto Minotti, supported by the third generation, guide the brand's core processes, from R&D and product engineering to interior decoration and collection curation.

Minotti Studio, established in 1996, coordinates the creative sphere across architecture, interior design, prototyping, textiles, and visual communication. Its Textile and Leather collection represents the 'seed and fruit of the company's sartorial know-how and the expert craftsmanship on upholstery,' a principle evident across indoor, outdoor, and hospitality environments.

Designer collaborations and collections
Since 2018, after more than 20 years of collaboration with Art Director Rodolfo Dordoni, Minotti has expanded its creative framework through collaborations with designers including Nendo, Marcio Kogan/Studio MK27, GamFratesi, Hannes Peer, and Giampiero Tagliaferri. These partnerships explore modularity, material articulation, and compositional flexibility, creating systems that respond to residential, hospitality, and open-air applications.

Vivienne by Gamfratesi
Italian-Danish duo GamFratesi developed the Vivienne seating system as an evolution of the Vivienne armchair. The designers describe it as 'a piece that plays with the harmony of shapes. Its soft and generous curves…evolve into a sofa system with new proportions. A perfect balance between sinuosity and geometric rigour, between the decorative and the essential, making it suitable for any modern space while maintaining an iconic and organic character.' The system incorporates sofas, chaise lounges, and elements with integrated tops, supported by finely contoured bases and recessed aluminium bars that partially conceal cushion thickness, giving the upholstery a lighter visual profile while retaining comfort.

Bézier by Studio MK27
The Bézier seating system by Marcio Kogan / Studio MK27 reinterprets the sofa as a modular, organic composition. Kogan notes, 'The entire universe is made of curves,' reflected in its fluid volumes and parametric forms. Infinitely combinable, Bézier features high-density polyurethane layers, precise seam tailoring, and lumbar cushions, creating adaptable, comfortable arrangements for residential and hospitality interiors, both indoors and outdoors.

Saki by Nendo
Nendo's Saki seating system builds on modularity and formal symbolism. Sato explains, 'A light and sinuous movement, translating into an enveloping and protective comfort, further enhanced by the softness of the cushions featuring a moulded internal structure, the result of meticulous ergonomic design.' Saki includes 2-, 3-, or 4-seat sofas, armchairs, benches, and island-like elements, with curvilinear aluminium feet and support panels in lacquer, fabric, or leather. The system is designed for flexible layouts across lounge, residential, and hospitality interiors.

Riley by Hannes Peer
Hannes Peer's Riley seating system introduces geometric articulation and dual design language. Peer states, "A dynamic and versatile design that interprets the embrace of two perfectly complementary souls, balanced between restraint and expressiveness, rigour and ease, permanence and fluidity. One is distinctly architectural, outward-facing, while the other is softer on the interior, featuring a strong decorative sign that extends an invitation to relax." Riley's monolithic volume rises from a recessed metal base, with vertical quilting and teardrop-shaped intersections between seat and armrest. Adjustable "relax" cushions, upholstered in layered polyurethanes over multidirectional aluminium frames, enhance ergonomic versatility.

Libra and Coupé by Giampiero Tagliaferri
Giampiero Tagliaferri's Libra and Coupé seating systems continue his narrative-driven, material-focused approach. His practice blends Milanese restraint with Californian simplicity, generating spaces that emphasise texture, light, and spatial rhythm. Libra includes a bergère, armchair, dining chair, sideboards, and tables, while Coupé reinterprets classic forms through a contemporary lens, finding a balance between vintage charm and modern functionality. His work is 'densely researched and narrative-driven,' creating furniture that supports both compositional flexibility and user comfort.

Materiality and modular strategy
Across all these collaborations, Minotti emphasises material research, surface finishes, and compositional adaptability. Bases and structures employ metals with anti-fingerprint or polished finishes, while upholstery combines leather, fabric, and polyurethane composites. Modular configurations allow variation in seat depths, layouts, and integration with tables, storage, and accessory elements, supporting both open-plan and segmented interior designs.

Global presence and exhibitions
Minotti operates over 60 flagship stores and 300 authorised dealers across 80 countries, with annual presentations at Salone del Mobile since 1961. Its Meda complex houses production, logistics, and a showroom that consolidates the brand's aesthetic vision. Recognised in 2022 by the Italian Ministry of Economic Development as a Historic Trademark of National Interest, Minotti continues to combine heritage with contemporary exploration, sustaining its position in the global design landscape.
