At London Design Festival 2025

From discarded glass fragments to vast sculptural chandelier

This September, the London Design Festival will showcase a landmark installation that merges innovation, sustainability, and architectural homage. "Beacon," a monumental sculptural lighting piece by renowned British designer Lee Broom, will grace the entrance of the Royal Festival Hall on London's South Bank from September 13 to 21, 2025. Supported and produced by Brokis and Materials Assemble, the installation draws inspiration from the area's iconic Brutalist architecture and the legacy of the 1951 Festival of Britain.

"Beacon" comprises 292 segments of brokiglass, a distinctive material crafted from recycled glass shards. Utilising a special fusing technology developed to upcycle discarded glass fragments, the installation reinterprets classic street lamps to form a structure resembling a vast sculptural chandelier. The glass elements are produced at Brokis' Czech factory.

Lee Broom, one of the UK's leading product designers, has created over 100 furniture, accessory, and lighting pieces since founding his company in 2007. His work is recognised and retailed across the globe, with collaborations including Christian Louboutin, Mulberry, and Wedgwood. For "Beacon," Broom drew inspiration from the Royal Festival Hall, the historic Victorian Dolphin Street Lamps, and the board-marked concrete of the Hayward Gallery architectural elements deeply embedded in the spirit of the South Bank.

Sustainability is at the heart of "Beacon." Each glass shade is forged from discarded fragments from Brokis' Czech glassworks, upcycling waste into radiant new forms. The installation is designed for disassembly, ensuring every component can be repurposed into individual light fixtures after deinstallation, promoting both environmental responsibility and design longevity.

"Beacon" will be on view for the duration of the London Design Festival 2025, from September 13 to 21. It will then remain in place as a key installation for the Southbank Centre's Winter Light Festival, running from late October 2025 to early February 2026.
