The Thai Trade Centre in Miami has reported that US President Donald Trump is preparing to impose tariffs on imported furniture, a move that could significantly impact Thailand, one of the top 10 exporters of furniture to the US.

According to the centre, Trump announced on Truth Social that an investigation is under way to assess the necessity and scale of the tariffs, with a final decision expected within 50 days of 22 August. Analysts believe the measure may invoke Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962, the same provision used for steel and aluminium tariffs currently set at 50%.
Industry experts caution that while Trump has set an October deadline, official procedures allow up to 360 days for investigation and action, suggesting the accelerated timeline may be politically motivated.
Thai exporters are advised to monitor developments closely, particularly regarding the scope of products covered, tariff rates by category or origin, and whether exemptions or adjustments to existing duties will be made.
Furniture, including general home furnishings, lamps and chairs, remains a key Thai export to the US, underscoring the potential economic impact if tariffs are introduced.
