The coast of South Africa welcomes world's most expensive beds

Hästens, the Swedish maker of the world's most expensive beds, has opened a showroom in Knysna, South Africa. The brand, known for its artisanal craftsmanship and use of natural materials, offers beds starting at R190,000, with the GRAND VIVIDUS range priced at R13 million.

The Knysna store, owned by Martin Hansson, the proprietor of the Head Over Heels boutique guest house, is the only African location to feature Hästens beds. Each mattress is handcrafted over 600 hours using horsehair, wool, cotton, flax, Swedish pine, and steel springs. The horsehair acts as a natural ventilation system, providing support, airflow, and moisture-wicking properties.

Store manager Nadya Ritschewald highlights a personalised buying experience, including guided tours, in-home trials, and a "recalibration programme" to maintain mattress performance for up to ten years. Beds come with a 25-year warranty and are designed to ensure optimal spinal alignment and uninterrupted sleep.

Founded in 1852 as a saddle-maker, Hästens has supplied the Swedish royal court for six generations and counts celebrities such as Tom Cruise, Angelina Jolie, and Drake among its clientele. Accessories including bespoke bed linens, pillows, and pyjamas are crafted from natural materials to complement the signature blue-check beds.

Hästens aims to combine luxury, health, and sustainability, offering South African consumers an immersive experience in high-end sleep solutions.
