German pellet prices edge upward as demand builds

The price of wood pellets in Germany rose in August 2025, emerging from its typical summer low, according to the German Pellet Institute (DEPI). The national average reached "310.82 euros per tonne," up 2.7 per cent from July, with one kilowatt hour of heat costing 6.22 cents. Pellets maintain a price advantage of around 29 per cent over heating oil.

DEPI advises buyers to secure supplies before the end of the summer holidays, warning that increased demand from both consumers and traders restocking for winter will likely drive prices higher.

Online markets have mirrored the trend, with loose pellets priced at "294 €/t" on heizpellets24.de and "297 €/t" on holzpellets.net as of 20 August. Bagged pellets are trading even higher, between €326 and €360 per tonne.

Regional price differences persist. Southern Germany recorded the highest average at "312.01 €/t," followed by Northern and Eastern Germany at "307.03 €/t," and Central Germany at "305.42 €/t" for six-tonne orders. Larger 26-tonne purchases were cheaper, averaging "297.34 €/t" in the South, "288.52 €/t" in the Centre, and "292.90 €/t" in the North and East.

The institute expects upward price pressure to continue as the heating season approaches.
