Downton Abbey-inspired design:

Brintons revives countryside elegance for modern homes

With the final Downton Abbey film premiering this September, heritage-inspired interiors are enjoying a remarkable revival. According to Google Trends, searches for "Downton Abbey" and "country living" have surged by 5,000% compared to 2024, highlighting a renewed passion for timeless countryside style.

Leading heritage carpet manufacturer Brintons is offering expert guidance on weaving this classic aesthetic into contemporary spaces.

Jodie Hatton, Design Manager at Brintons, explains:
"You don't need exposed beams or sweeping views to evoke the quiet elegance of the countryside. With the right materials and a thoughtful palette, any urban home can be softened with rural charm."

Hatton emphasises the transformative power of flooring, advising homeowners to "start with the foundation" and "reimagine traditional patterns through a contemporary lens to bring the charm of the countryside to your city apartment."

For texture and warmth, Hatton recommends wool:
"The texture of wool underfoot coupled with a warm colour makes it the perfect base upon which to shape a comfortable and inviting interior scheme. … A soft woven wool carpet, layered with accessories in cashmere, mohair and linen will all work to soften the overall look."

Balancing rich flooring with natural materials, such as wood, rattan, or ceramics, can help create a cohesive scheme. Hatton adds:
"Try to strike a balance. … In compact city spaces, smaller motifs or tonal patterns can help introduce visual texture without overwhelming the space."

Brintons, renowned globally for its design innovation and quality craftsmanship, offers an extensive range of wool-rich carpets and rugs inspired by centuries of archival design — from Baroque elegance to modern minimalism.

"When executed well, the countryside aesthetic can bring a sense of tranquillity and storytelling to even the most contemporary homes," says Hatton.
