European sawmiller Pfeifer Group has completed construction of a new sawmill for its subsidiary Pölkky Oy in Kajaani, Finland, increasing annual production capacity from 200,000 m³ to 450,000 m³ of sawn timber. The facility, described as one of the most efficient and technologically advanced in the Nordic countries, forms a key part of the Group's growth strategy.

The site, acquired from Pölkky Oy in January 2023, incorporates highly automated production and sustainable construction. Pfeifer installed 970 m³ of cross-laminated timber (CLT), with additional glulam and solid-timber components supplied by Pölkky and large custom elements sourced from Versowood. The mill will process Nordic pine and spruce to support higher production, greater added value, and stronger international presence.
Concurrently, Pfeifer is investing in its Uelzen site with a new waste wood recycling plant for class A1 and A2 wood, alongside modernising the log cutting process. A high-performance sawing line will replace a system over 30 years old, aiming to reduce costs, improve yields, and boost output.
Michael Pfeifer, CEO, said, "In building our new sawmill in Kajaani, we're investing for the future," while CTO Clemens Pfeifer noted that the developments ensure both sites are "ideally positioned for the future."
