Museum Wegner celebrates the legacy of Hans J. Wegner

Danish architecture firm Cobe has unveiled its design for Museum Wegner, dedicated to the life and work of Hans J. Wegner, widely regarded as the Master of the Chair. Situated in Tønder, the town where Wegner was born and trained as a carpenter, the museum honours his design philosophy and commitment to craftsmanship.

The project involves the transformation of a historic farm dating back to 1445, with the addition of a timber extension that respects local building traditions and cultural heritage. The architecture draws inspiration from Wegner's approach, merging "the sculptural with the functional" and employing his preferred material, wood.

Cobe's design emphasises visible, simple constructions and traditional building techniques, embracing an "honest use of materials" and creating a clear dialogue between form and function. The museum seeks to mirror Wegner's ability to blend iconic, sculptural design with everyday practicality, offering visitors not just a building, but an architectural tribute engaged with nature, context, and the designer's enduring legacy.

Through its thoughtful design, Museum Wegner aims to celebrate both the aesthetic and functional aspects of Danish craftsmanship, reflecting the principles that made Wegner's work internationally acclaimed while reinforcing the cultural and historical significance of the site.
